Chichén Itzá, the ancient Mayan city in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, was built over several centuries. The city continued to thrive as a major cultural and political center until the decline of the Maya civilization in the region, likely due to a combination of factors such as warfare, drought, and resource depletion. By the time the Spanish arrived in the early 16th century, Chichén Itzá was largely abandoned and in ruins.
